Exploring Ethics and Leadership from a Global Perspective

Social Credit -Privacy

Transcript

We have another question for you. What are the implications of these social credit systems that are powered by AI?

Let’s go back to the Taylor Swift example (because it’s always interesting to talk about Taylor Swift). From a security standpoint the guy got caught and that should be a good thing. We want to have as secure an environment as possible, yet we have to at least ask at what cost.

AI is powering the video surveillance system making it efficient and effective. At the same time, we have our mobile technologies tracking us 24/7. On top of that, we are now introducing social aspects of behaviour rating to evaluate our creditworthiness. Think about it, you might get higher or lower credit just because you like Taylor Swift.

We are not saying no to introducing these new technologies and new rating systems. But as we have been emphasizing, as a society, we need to think collectively about what we are giving up for security and how much is too much.

Discussion Questions

  • In the advent of AI and all the convenience that it brings us, how much privacy are we willing to give up in exchange for that convenience?
  • And what about those people who are not willing to do so?
